AmeriCorps VISTA Community Harvest

Who we are

Walla Walla Community Harvest is a gleaning program of Blue Mountain Action Council, created to support food assistance programs with fresh and local produce. Our goal is to increase the amount of fresh produce available by gleaning local farms, orchards and gardens. We believe everyone should have access to fresh and healthy foods.

What is gleaning?

Gleaning, an ancient practice, is the act of gathering food from fields, orchards and gardens after harvest. Gleaning can also include sorting and recovering produce from "cull bins". This food might have blemishes or not meet market standards, but is perfectly edible. Gleaning is an effective tool to supply fresh food to those in need.

How does it work?

During the harvest season, gardeners and growers will contact us about their extra produce. Walla Walla Community Harvest volunteers will then be contacted by the gleaning coordinator with details of each glean. Volunteers will be met at the site by a supervisor who will go over gleaning etiquette and safety procedures. The fresh produce will be delivered to Blue Mountain Action Council's Food Warehouse for distribution to local food banks and hot meal programs.

How do I volunteer to help or donate fresh produce?

Contact: Casi Christensen by email or call our office at 509-529-4980. Volunteers will be required to sign a release and waiver of liability. Donations can be accepted at the Food Warehouse on 921 West Cherry Street. Call ahead for staff availablity at 529-3561.

Your hands are needed. Glean it like you mean it!
