Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities at BMAC:
Adult Literacy Tutoring
The Adult Literacy Program matches adults interested in improving their skill in a topic area with a one-on-one tutor to partner with them to achieve their goal. Tutor/student pairs will meet twice each week for 60-minute tutoring sessions. Tutors will participate in an orientation meeting with the Adult Literacy Program Manager, a 4-hour training session and occasional tutor group meetings.
Tutors work with their students on a variety of topic areas including reading, writing, math, English as a second language (ESL), GED study and test preparation, citizenship/naturalization, basic computer skills, obtaining a driver’s license and much more. Please refer to the BMAC Adult Literacy page for more information.
The Walla Walla Asset Building Coalition (WWABC) is a team of volunteers representing city government, non-profit agencies, financial institutions and interested citizens who focus on providing information and education on topics of financial literacy/empowerment. With a mission to help Walla Walla Valley residents build greater financial security for themselves and their families, the WWABC is involved in a number of outreach programs from assisting folks to obtain bank accounts to offering financial literacy courses, to promoting information such as the Earned Income Tax Credit and free tax preparation.
The WWABC meets the first Wednesday of the month from 3-4 p.m. Other than the monthly meeting, coalition members volunteer to work on outreach projects as their time and talents allow.
The BMAC Food Bank provides food resources to communities throughout the Walla Walla Valley and beyond via support for local food pantries and direct-to-community distributions. Volunteers are integral to the operation of the Food Bank and may participate in a wide variety of activities including staffing distributions, assembling food boxes, sorting donated resources, organizing food drives, and more. For information about current volunteer opportunities, please email info@bmacww.org or call 509-520-8375. Want to help at the Food Bank? Click here to apply to volunteer. Registering a large group? Want to join our summer gleaning team? Summer gleaning opportunities at the BMAC Food Bank often come with little notice. Text VOLUNTEER to 833-753-0944 to receive notifications about volunteer glean opportunities. Let's work together to nourish our neighbors and make the most of our Valley's abundance.
BMAC is the host of a new regional office for the Washington State Long-Term Care Ombuds Program (LTCOP). This program provides effective, visible advocacy for residents in long-term care facilities.
A certified Ombuds is a volunteer, observer, listener, detective, communicator, and problem-solver who advocates for residents in long-term care facilities. Each volunteer receives extensive free training and support.
Our volunteers find that they enjoy knowing that their volunteer work makes a critical difference in the lives of vulnerable people. Volunteer Ombuds work to protect residents’ rights and dignity, ensure quality care and prevent neglect, abuse, and other issues.
In addition to the regular volunteer opportunities listed above, short-term volunteer opportunities arise occasionally. Please call our office at 509-529-4980 to speak with us about your volunteer interests.
Thank you for supporting our neighbors in need!
